1961 Chateau Pavie 1.5L (Hedges & Butler Bottling)

Harvest time 1961 and workers were in the fields at Chateau Pavie. If they had the radio on, they may well have been listening to Bobby Vee`s "Take Good Care of My Baby" which was top of the Billboard 100 at the time. They had no idea that 63 years later in Dallas Texas we would be opening a magnum of 1961 Chateau Pavie, made from the very grapes they were picking. We raise a glass to them anyway...it was magnificent!

Jancis Robinson - Wonderful polished crimson. Very complex and fine. Together and fragrant and mellow. No excess of tannin – unlike other 1961s – although tannin did come up after a while in glass. Very long and complete. Lovely stuff. Great fan of flavours on the finish. (9/2011)

Neal Martin - Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience's Pavie vertical. Given its age, the Pavie 1961 has quite a deep colour: clear and promising. The nose is simple but full of life, slightly leafy with traces of wild red berry fruit, mocha and iodine that unfurls enticingly in the glass. The palate is well balanced with vibrant acidity, still a little chewy in the mouth with vivid red-berried fruit and a beautifully poised, soy-tinged finish. This is a very impressive, fully mature Saint Emilion that is drinking well at nigh fifty years of age.
