In 1850 California just became part of the US and Italy still didn't exist as a country. At the same time, somewhere on the island of Madeira, the D'Oliveiras workers were picking grapes, crushing them with their feet and putting this very wine into barrels. Bottled and painted by hand in 2021, this 1850 Verdelho has been aged for 171 years in old French oak barrels in the 17th century wine lodge in the heart of old Funchal....and we opened one!

Robert Parker`s Wine Advocate - "The 1850 Verdelho remains an exquisite Madeira that is one of the finest ever produced in this, the founding year of the winery. It has a well-defined bouquet with seductive notes of fresh marmalade, quince, dried mango and melted candle wax. The palate is crisp and well-defined with superb acidity that is perfectly in tune with the spice-laden vestiges of decayed fruit.
