2023 Alphonse Mellot La Moussiere Sancerre
As far back as 1513 local records mention the Mellot family as wine merchants and growers of wines of excellent quality, gaining further recognition when César Mellot was appointed as Wine Advisor to Louis XIV in 1698. At the beginning of the XIX century Alphonse Mellot founded a tavern in Sancerre where one could savor the local wines and began a flourishing trade. In 1881 he was granted a license to ship his wine throughout France and all over the World, this marked the beginning of an international presence, which has been developed by the family business from father to son ever since. Today, with centuries of winemaking tradition under their belt, the Alphonse Mellot label sits at the top of the wine producing pyramid in Sancerre The house’s ‘Tete-de-Cuvee,’ Domaine la Moussière, is one of the greatest 'classic' Sancerres: linear, lithe, acid-driven and elegant. We had the pleasure of hosting Alphonse Mellot (the19th) at the club last week, and we tasted through his stunning portfolio. The 'La Moussiere' is the Burgundy lover`s Sancerre, and a candidate for Graileys go-to summer white. Back up the truck.

2020 Domaine de Montille Chassagne-Montrachet
The 2020 Domaine de Montille Chassagne-Montrachet is a distinguished white Burgundy crafted entirely from Chardonnay grapes. Sourced from two notable plots, "Champs Derrières" and "Les Houillères," the latter is situated on the border with Puligny, just below Bâtard-Montrachet. This location imparts the wine with an unusual minerality and finesse, aligning its profile more closely with Puligny wines, known for their freshness, rather than the typically more opulent and honeyed Chassagne offerings. The 2020 Domaine de Montille Chassagne-Montrachet is an elegant and refined expression of its terroir, offering a harmonious balance of fruit, minerality, and freshness.

2021 Rotem & Mounir Saouma "Inopia" Blanc
Rotem & Mounir’s wines are breathtaking. This spectacular white is more reminiscent of a quality Meursault than a Rhone. The Inopia will undoubtedly change your perception of the traditional wines of the region. The kaleidoscope of the terroirs he works with are reflected in his cellar, like a mad scientist`s lab, there is a combination of barrels, foudres, cement and concrete eggs, all used to tease out the unique characteristics of his top quality fruit in a brighter, more modern version of the classic Rhone varietals. The Inopia Blanc shakes up the old, flabby, more viscous white Rhones, and opens your eyes to a lighter, more complex, Burgundian style white. The 2021 Inopia Blanc is a forward-thinking, groundbreaking wine at a shockingly modest price point. Trust us.

2015 Chateau Lascombes
Just recently we have been blown away by Chateau Lascombes from 2000, 2012 & 2015. We have been so impressed with the quality of this unsung hero; we have adopted a buy-on-sight policy so we can pass on the experience to our members & clients. While referring to the majestic Triple 96 Point 2015 Chateau Lascombes, Robert M. Parker Jr. went on the record with: "Probably the greatest Lascombes made to date," and it has been a very long process. The 2015 Château Lascombes is a bold and polished Margaux that beautifully captures the richness and finesse of this exceptional vintage. A deep, inky hue leads to a nose layered with blackberry compote, cassis, and violets, laced with hints of mocha, cedar, and sweet spice. On the palate, the wine is plush and full-bodied, with velvety tannins supporting a core of ripe dark fruit, while a streak of freshness keeps everything vibrant and in balance. The finish is long and luxurious, showcasing both the power and elegance that Margaux is known for. Château Lascombes has a storied history dating back to the 17th century, named after the knight Antoine de Lascombes, who was one of its earliest known owners. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Médoc Classification, the estate has undergone significant transformation in recent decades. Major investments and modernizations, particularly since the early 2000s, have elevated the quality of the wines, making Lascombes a standout among Margaux producers. Today, the estate blends tradition with innovation, crafting wines that express both the character of the terroir and the precision of contemporary winemaking. The 2015 vintage is a striking example of that balance.

The approach is extreme - two people, together doing everything by hand, working with a dazzling array of Burgundy’s great terroirs. His wines scream a level of quality normally attributed to the Burgundy elite, but this guy is hot on their heels, consistently conjuring up Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of extraordinary quality in very limited quantities.
